Throughout this story idealistic privilege clashes with a reality of environmental decline. Although the ship’s passengers are able to live forever and enjoy a privileged life, ultimately they all feel empty and hopeless due to the earth’s destruction. As the sequence unfolds, illustrative imagery evocative of beautiful yet dying landscapes emulate the story’s ‘beautiful voyage’. This sequence focuses on the contrast between the ignorance of the privileged tourists and the pervasive hopelessness they feel. The atmosphere of each frame evokes a calming but simultaneously sad mood, reflecting the desolate reality of climate destruction that the protagonist is faced with on his cruise.
